Across several Moodle activities, the Glossary is the home base of peer-based (or collaborative) construction of knowledge.
As defined by moodle.com, the Moodle Glossary Activity works as a “knowledge bank,” where educators can add definitions for special terms associated with a subject. However, the Glossary can take many forms and allow for a diverse set of scenarios.
For starters, educators can turn students into editors. With creating and modifying capabilities, the Glossary allows for collaborative class projects that involve original research, source and reference management, peer review, and similar experiences that will familiarize them with the real-life research process.
Glossary Idea #1: Identify differences between understanding of a concept among your students and promote a debate about it by asking, “Where did you first hear that term?”
Then there is the auto-linking feature, which automatically recognizes terms with an entry in the Glossary, written anywhere in the Moodle course. No matter if it is student- or teacher-made content, if the term is mentioned, it will automatically show a link to its Glossary definition.
Glossary Idea #2: Encourage students to provide and request understandable and helpful definitions from each other: “Which of the concepts we’ve covered so far do feel you don’t fully grasp yet?”
Now in Moodle 3.3, the Glossary is one of the beneficiaries of the expanded functionality of Moodle Tags. Used to better organize information elements across Moodle pages and activities, it now allows you to tag individual Glossary entries. With the update, Glossary entries will appear on the tag pages, which list every Moodle site or course item with the same tag.
Glossary Idea #3: Make “intergenerational” Glossaries by keeping them across editions of the course. New students can use Glossaries from previous classes as reference, as well as expand upon and revise them as needed.
