Convergence, the “Collaborative Learning Environment” from University of California, San Francisco, continues to share some of the Moodleverse’ best practices in open source, digital, and now mobile learning, too. It was one of the first CLEs (a bundle of systems including the Moodle LMS) to jump into Moodle Mobile, and then Moodle Desktop, which enables access on Microsoft mobile devices such as Surface.

Their latest adoption, namely direct grading on Moodle Mobile, is reviewed on a recent blog post that includes highlighting the significant improvement of the teacher workflow for grading student submissions. Files no longer need to be downloaded and annotated using different apps. All within Moodle Mobile, teachers can:

  • Access a list of all submissions;
  • Access each submission;
  • Annotate, add comments, highlights, and feedback, and provide submission grade;
  • Enable notifications for students once the grading is complete; and
  • Move through submissions in sequence or jump to a specific submission, without returning to the list.

If students submit different types of files, Moodle handles the necessary conversions. Of course, since Moodle 3.3, teachers have the ability to restrict the type of file students can upload as submissions.

The icing on Moodle Mobile’s cake is the offline access feature, which allows teachers to perform the tasks listed above without having permanent internet connection. As one can expect, this requires teachers to download the submissions beforehand, and the grades will synchronize once the app goes back online. While Moodle Mobile handles all aspects of assignment grading, teachers also have the option to download submissions, either one by one or in a bulk ZIP package.

    ** The CLE is our university’s branded name for our Moodle installation, and includes other systems that are integrated into Moodle.

    ** We refer to Moodle as an LMS (Learning Management System), not “a CLE.”

    ** We have released Moodle Mobile to our users, but we are not ready to recommend that instructors use it to perform grading tasks, or that students engage in high-stakes activities, such as quiz-taking via their mobile devices.
