Moodle offers the ability to create groups and groupings as part of its core features. Groups are collections of users within courses.

Activate groups by going to Course Administration > Edit Settings. The Group settings are close to the bottom of the page. You can create groups that are visible to any student, whether they belong or not. You can also create separate groups, that remain invisible to students who do not belong.

A Groups section in Course Administration > Users is now available, where you can create groups and assign students.

You can also create Groupings, which are groups of groups, available in the same section.

Once they are enabled, you can edit group permissions for content and activity by clicking on “Turn Editing On”, and clicking on the group icon next to the content (Groupings can also be used to differentiate assignments to different Groups).
