The Aardvark Theme has been popular for many years (it is one of our favorites), calling itself “the original ‘menubar’ based theme for Moodle, evolved for the modern student.” The developer, Shaun Daubney, has created a fantastic flat theme using a bootstrap base.
A 2.9 update is now on the street and, judging from the comments on the plugin page, it is receiving a warm reception.
And, if there is any doubt about whether or not this theme can look great for your school or institution, just check it out in action at the Newbury School Moodle page.
You can download the theme update here: https://moodle.org/plugins/view/theme_aardvark
