Job Description

StraighterLine, an innovative provider of online college courses for credit, is seeking a software developer to help build our technology foundation for the future.  The ideal candidate will have prior experience developing and supporting a high traffic eCommerce site and related backend systems.

This position will grow in responsibility as the candidate demonstrates his or her capabilities.  The plan is for the successful candidate to lead the technology behind the online learning experience of our students.
Required Experience

  • Have 5 or more years of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (LAMP) or WAMP development including
    • Using Model/View/Controller (MVC) design patterns
    • Object-oriented design and programming
    • Use of code frameworks such as Zend, CakePHP, or Symfony
    • Hands-on experience with Unit Testing Tools like PHPUnit
    • Experience with SQL queries using MySQL
    • Demonstrated expertise with coding best practices
    • PHP as a primary language
  • 2 or more years of c# using .Net  -or-  Java, Java applets and Java server page (JSP)
  • Web client-side development collaborating with a marketing a specialist and a designer
    • HTML and XHTML using CSS
    • JavaScript and JSON
    • Flash Actionscript
    • AJAX
    • Understanding and experience with web analytics and SEO
  • Experience integrating multiple systems, processes and data
    • Single signon and standard authentication protocols (LDAP, SAML)
    • Understanding of networking essentials  to design and implement physically distributed enterprise applications (application components in multiple data centers)
  • Experience integrating with commercial package applications and SaaS based platforms
  • Using XML data structures
  • Web services (SOAP, Rest)
  • Hands on experience with LAMP platform components
    • Linux system administration
    • Scripting language such as PERL
    • Apache configuration
    • MySQL database administration
    • SQL query creation and optimization

Desired Experience

  • Moodle or a Learning Management System
  • Experience with Magento eCommerce software
  • Agile methodology
  • Subversion code management

Scope of work:

  • Assist with the implementation of a new Moodle system by developing custom plug-ins and modules in collaboration with a Moodle development contractor
  • Recommend and implement Moodle plug-ins that enhance the student/user experience
  • Assume lead responsibility for student learning software as your experience grows
