Joule is a Moodlerooms distribution of the Moodle LMS. For most intents it is Moodle’s core with a few addons and the promise of hosted stability through a hosting contract with Moodlerooms, an official Moodle partner. While Joule uses Moodle’s core and some 3rd party plugins, it is not available as a self-hosted solution.
You can play with Joule and it’s non-standard Moodle features at Moodlerooms’ demo site (http://demo.moodlerooms.com/); and now for the first time ever you can see some videos of Moodlerooms’ mobile app for Joule which works on iOS and Blackberry and Android.
It appears that Moodlerooms has created a great, commercial app for their Joule users (it’s useless to non-Moodlerooms customers); and it’s a great example of what available mobile apps for Moodle might achieve over time. Check out the videos at http://www.moodlerooms.com/blog or find the intro video embedded below.
A few features you’ll see in the videos:
- directory (user) search
- course listing: recent activities, upcoming events and grades (grades might be the best feature available to mobile Joule users checking on returned work or graded assignments over the weekend/on the go)
- maps (Joule specific for the “locations” block)
- friends (Joule specific for the “Dub me now” plugin which enhances social features in Moodle)
