Just out of the “hands-on” MoodleMoot Dearborn, the team behind open source development at this Michigan school district has released updates to the “Fordson” theme. Catering to the K-12 segment and developed in close proximity to real K-12 teachers, Fordson has grown in popularity, despite its relative youth. Fordson was released just a little over six months ago as a branch of Moodle’s default “Boost” theme from version 3.2 on.

The main highlight of Fordson is the expanded options for the course gallery. The original grid already offered a visual layout, but this update features larger images with text on top, with a translucent or white background behind. Not to toot his own horn, Dearborn’s Chris Kenniburg details the adjustments he made to the Moodle renderer, emphasizing that “it is something that requires a lot of work and know-how.”

The Fordson theme has gathered a lot of praise for its unique set of features, designed by Kenniburg and company for a “straightforward” Moodle experience to enhance anybody’s Moodle experience, not just those in the K-12 space:

  • A course management panel that offers quick access to configuration pages
  • Customizable “Nav Drawer” (the collapsible left-side menu)
  • Course dropdown
  • Easy Enrollment plugin built-in, enrolling and taking students to a course home page in one step
  • Color presets, background images, and social media icon footer

More information about Moodle renderers can be found here.

Fordson is available for Moodle 3.2 and 3.3 at the “Fordson” Theme install and download page.
