Brett McCroary, an inspiring carpentry teacher who was one of MoodleMoot Australia 2016’s highlights, shared some of his presentation and pedagogical sagacity in an interview for

We reviewed McCroary’s talk last December, itself the continuation of a talk given the previous year in the same venue. With the incessant growth of the construction industry across states in Australia, professionalization has become a pressing issue. Australian authorities made a Building Certificate mandatory for building managers, even at small firms. Tasked with managing the certificate program for the Illawarra TAFE, a vocational school in New South Wales, McCroary successfully leveraged Moodle to offer a quality program that certifies more than 70% of enrolled students.

He became one of the foremost presenters of evidence of how Moodle can “branch out” of the virtual or classroom setting to support teaching of more “hands-on” subjects. As a result, further work on Moodle’s possibilities beyond the classroom have received increasing support. But whether you are discussing theory or practice with the help of Moodle, the secret, in one word, for McCroary, would be relatability.

McCroary makes sure his personal experiences are reflected in both his teaching and his presentations. This helps him deliver complementary lessons, such as the value of storytelling or resourcefulness.
