The recent release of Moodle 3.2 has updates, upgrades and refreshes that are applicable to everyone in the learning community. However, there are a few aspects of the new version that are especially interesting for teachers. We’ve looked at these through the three perspectives below.
The Productivity Perspective
Moodle 3.2 is an effort on easy access to pages, including grading and admin settings. A the forefront there is the “Boost” theme, that downplays blocks to increase the prominence of content, allowing not only teacher but students to make better choices, with fewer distractions and in less time. Productivity features include:
- Nav drawer, hidable into a hamburger icon.
- Instant course content and activity editing from a gear icon, without leaving the page.
- Streamlined audio and video embedding.
- Teachers can select options on the Choice Activity on behalf of students.
- Content duplication button for lessons.
The Engagement Perspective
Teachers can promote a vibrant, ongoing community out of a Moodle course with the increased interaction features. A teacher can look more aware of student activity in the forums, their feedback on assignments, and general behavior through the reporting and visualization panel. Engagement features include:
- The ability to make quick edits to content according to student requests.
- More options in user enrollment and participation with dedicated screens.
- More flexible rubrics and advanced scoring rules, even negative scores.
- Discussion locking to limit replies on specific threads, to favor contributions in others.
- Ability to encourage students to export their work, if deemed valuable, to public portfolios.
- Ability to override deadlines for special circumstances to individual students or the group as a whole.
- User Tours will quickly introduce students to the Moodle course so they feel welcome from the start.
The Understanding (Analytics) Perspective
Moodle 3.2 expands on logging, reporting and evidence, allowing teachers to measure and compare strategies and outcomes with past courses, or with interventions by other professionals. Additional access to standards makes valuable pedagogical outcomes to be showcased through evidence. Evidence tools in Moodle 3.2 include:
- Student portfolio exporting.
- Competency frameworks. On Moodle.net/competencies teachers can access common competency frameworks.
- Exporting activities design in Moodle, to share in other Moodle course with Learning Tools Interoperability, or any technology that supports LTI.
- Interactive report charts, responsive and dynamically updated with information about students.
