It was a long pending wishlist to provide a grade deduction mechanism in Moodle activities to penalize the students for late attempt/submission. Daniel Thies from Concordia College, Alabama has come up with a solution for penalizing students for attempting the quiz after the due date.
Daniel faced the problem when the students asked for missing deadlines and observed that standard quiz in Moodle does not provide an easy way to apply a penalty for late submissions.
Acc. to Daniel – “Not granting the extensions means that the student does not learn the material covered, but granting the extension encourages the behavior.”
He come up with developing two question behavior plugins to apply a penalty to all question attempts – Adaptive Penalty and Deferred Penalty, and one quiz access rule plugin which overrides the question behavior after a specified time.
As per Daniel:
After the due date, the question behavior can be changed from a standard behavior to one of these. Students starting the assignment before the due date receive full credit; any after the due date are penalized with the value set in multiple tries in the question.
You can check out the plugins from these links and share your feedback with Daniel in this forum thread.
