Geo-Target Your Content Delivery With The GPS Course Format

Recently updated for Moodle 3.0, the GPS Course Format offers an interesting opportunity for anyone delivering content across a dispersed geographic region, especially Moodlepreneurs. I love the idea of getting as granular as possible with content and, ultimately, I am a believer that this is what learners will demand in the future; geocoding content so that you’re delivering what a learner needs, when they need it, could be a massive differentiator for your business.

The original creators of the plugin, ka:media, agree with this view. As described on, the format was originally developed:

in a “Pro” version for Totara and its own systems…The team discovered… in the developing process, that a GPS format will be a very helpful tool for a broad range of users, e.g. teachers or in tourism.

They have also published a helpful video overviewing the plugin (note: it is slightly outdated, but still generally useful for evaluation). Check it out here or just watch it below:

If you seriously consider the power of Mobile for future learning, the power of geo-coding your material is again multiplied. Going further, the potential for real or near-real time experiential learning opportunities with groups are far and wide.

PS – this plugin also was also given the “Reviewers Choice” award.
