In a Moodle forum thread, long time moodler Gareth J. Barnard announced the latest release of the Essential theme for Moodle 2.9, 3.0 and 3.1.
Barnard reports lots of small fixes, both under the hood and in visual experience. Among the new lay out features we now have:
- Group icons update to reflect new group status.
- Fixed header height.
- Better compatibility with RTL (Right-To-Left) language layouts.
- Assignment page is now covered with the Essential theme.
The popular attributes that make Essential a moodleverse hit remain. Short load times by the use of Font Awesome instead of graphics for icons. Easy to embed Google Fonts. High level of customization. Use of Bootstrap that “pushes what it can do”, particularly in CSS grids and responsiveness.
User good reception and adoption has been on steady increase since its launch in 2013. Thousands of Moodle setups now have a look that is “as little as Moodle as possible“.
Find out more about the Essential theme in its (GitHub) documentation, including download and installation instructions.
