BREAKING: Moodle 3.2 Delayed

On a Moodle Forum discussion, Moodle HQ’s Marina Glancy broke the news. The Moodle Core team has realized they need some more time to polish the new features.

The decision will not affect releases planned for the other Moodle versions with active development, 2.9 and 3.1. It will not affect the security updates for Moodle 2.7 LTS and 3.0 LTS either.

Glancy mentiones as the main reason for the decision to delay, the work on Theme. Specifically, it involves the implementation of the Bootstrap 4 framework. The migration presents several challenges, as Boostrap 4 is “a major rewrite of almost the entire [Boostrap] project“.

An Issue on the Moodle Tracker deals with Bootstrap implementation. It offers a glimpse of the complexities the team is currently facing. Delays in development create a chain reaction of sorts: community QA is on hold, and so is documentation writing. The team agrees it is not worthwhile to begin theses tasks while glaring issues remain.

Moodle 3.2 is an ambitious attempt to upgrade, not only the theme and navigation of Moodle, but the idea and feelings of the LMS by its users. The Moodle Roadmap shows the many paths 3.2 is following, shown in detail at last week’s MoodleMoot AU:

  • Foremost, Theme and Navigation.
  • LTI Compliance and Extensions.
  • New Graph API and Updated Reports.
  • Overhaul of Messaging and Notifications.
  • Custom Guided Tours and Tutorial.

The new release date for Moodle 3.2 is scheduled for Monday, November 28th 2016.
