If you’re using Moodle in the classroom there are some great tools to help you efficiently manage the in classroom routine including attendance and learning your student names. Each is available at Moodle.org in the Addons database and each could be a compliment to the others helping to get your classroom in order.
Attendance Module: this activity module helps to maintain a record of attendance for students. There’s also a block available to help with managing attendance no matter how many times a week or semester the class meets. Attendance records are shared with each student, respectively. Read more about it here: http://docs.moodle.org/26/en/Attendance_module
Sign in Sheet: this block creates a printable list of your students so that you can passively take attendance (just use the completed sign in sheet after class to enter the attendance record).
Faces: Want to make sure you have a handle on your classroom (and that no one is gaming your attendance record)? The Faces block creates a print view of your student roster with their profile images to help you create some name recognition and familiarity with your course.
Each of the above addons is available for up to Moodle 2.6.
