From the press release,

Dear Partner,

I’m excited to share some important news from Blackboard. Today we’ve made a series of important announcements, including the launch of a new business at our company to support open source technologies in education.

We’ve launched this new effort, called Blackboard Education Open Source Services, with the acquisition of two of the world’s leading companies supporting open source to guide this work: Moodlerooms and NetSpot. Both companies are leading members of the official Moodle Partner network, and by joining forces with them Blackboard becomes one of the largest providers of open source services to education institutions worldwide.

This step is part of our ongoing strategy to support all parts of the education experience. We’re doing this within and beyond the LMS, with a range of platforms that support different areas institutions need to successfully support learners – from client support and hosting to complementary technologies that support mobility, real-time collaboration, analytics, campus services and notification and other needs.

We’re excited about growing our work in this way and look forward to talking more with you about how it fits into our collaboration to support education institutions.
